Swimming is all about rhythm and efficiency. In this 30 set series we break down the stroke cycle and focus on each of the key parts in turn to help you understand what you are looking to achieve with each phase and how it all fits together into a nice efficient stroke.
We do this through a series of warm-up & drill sets, with each set having its own coach briefing video and where appropriate, videos of the drills themselves being performed.
It’s important to note that we are not providing you with a main conditioning set. The idea is that you would pair these warm-up & drills sets with a conditioning session such as one from another of our swim series and substitute the standard warm-up in that session for one of these warm-up & drills sets.
The reason we advocate incorporating technique work as part of a warm-up and do not recommend stand-alone technique sessions is because a full session focused on technique can easily become overwhelming and boring. Instead, the idea is for you to achieve progress through repetition and focus on one element at a time.
In fact, you will notice some of the drills are repeated for a number of sessions/weeks. This is because it really takes time to remap your neuromuscular pathways and essentially, teach your body to move differently, even if it is a seemingly small change. It takes a lot of repetition to create new habits. Therefore, we encourage you to see this series as a long-term project and not a quick fix. Take your time over each technique focus, and if you think necessary, repeat sets more than prescribed until you feel you have cracked that specific element of technique.
What you will need?
In order to follow this series, you will need at least a free Training Peaks account.
To perform the swim drills you will need the following kit:
- a set of short training fins (i.e. not scuba type fins); and
- a pull buoy.
We would recommend purchasing a Training Peaks premium subscription to enable you to move the warm-up sets to align with your swim sessions and to repeat them if you feel it necessary.
Otherwise, best of luck with the series and take your time working through the sets!
